Oh yes. I wonder if that's something that's broken lately?

Set python2.6 to be the default alternative and it works OK...

[ec2-user@ip-172-31-34-97 ~]$ sudo alternatives --set python 
/usr/bin/python2.6

[ec2-user@ip-172-31-34-97 ~]$ ansible --version
ansible 1.9.2
