Build ant

I get this when following the build instructions for ant 

Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NullPointerException
        at org.apache.tools.ant.Main.runBuild(Main.java, Compiled Code)
        at org.apache.tools.ant.Main.main(Main.java, Compiled Code)

any suggestions?
