Both memoryMaximumSize and memoryInitialSize cause the compile to fail with 
"Invalid option or argument"

you need to specify fork="yes" to take advantage of the memory setting.  Not
running a "forked" javac will produce the error you describe.

There is a bug in that the memeory settings should be ignored (and the docs say
they are) if you run javac in the same VM, it will be fixed in Ant 1.4.1.
