It is an unfortunate "fact of sofware life" that once something is released for a long while, even if it was a bug, if a lot of people have coded to that bug, you usually need to let it stand. It would be just as bad or worse to break backwards compatibility. So, even if it is not according to spec, often it is better to change the spec, and add in the "fix" as a non-default option, as Pete suggested. Unfortunate but unavoidable.
