(1) The issue has been discussed on various Jakarta (and other Apache) mailing lists before, and the majority of people has always been against it.
(2) As Peter already said, rewriting the subject (or most other headers) violates RFCs. (3) No list I am subscribed to that uses a [tag] convention has a mailing list software smart enough to deal with all kinds of misconfigured mail user agents. You'll end up with a subject line [tag] Re[2]: [tag] Re^2: [tag] AW: [tag] Sv: [tag] some subject just because people can not get their MUA to use "Re" and nothing else. The same people that are unable or unwilling to configure their MUA to filter incoming mail based on unique header lines are unable/unwilling to make their response lines suitable for a tag based identification.
