Tim,
we agree that it is inconvenient, and that something will need to be done.
But a lot of people use $$ signs to escape the $ sign, so we need to keep
backwards compatibiliity such that $$ maps to $ (and $ maps to $ too). You
patch is a start, but it needs this extra bit to work
as of last week there are unit tests for property expansion; any patch for
property expansion should pass all of them (i think)
