Why does not mapper convert slashes to or from ${file.seperator}?

Hi,

I'd like to know why mapper does not convert slashes to or
from ${file.seperator}. I am aware of bugs 3053 & 4045 on
this subject, but would like to know why I need to use a
pathconvert to feed a mapper whereas it is not required
elsewhere.
