I feel your pain, but dont want to make the changes

1. that backslash escaping? It's in the property file spec.

2. if we made the private stuff protected, we would have to freeze the
implementation indefinately; the members would have become part of the public
API of ant. 

3. why do you need to filter out the escapes? Maybe there is another solution,
perhaps one of the new FilterReaders (a characterstripper reader would be a nice
generic filter)
