Can Ant be used for other languages than Java...

The introduction to Ant describes it as being "...kind of like make, without
make's wrinkles.".  Does this mean that with the right extensions, it could
be used to replace the use of make for building projects with C++ or other
languages?  If so, has anybody done this and are there any examples?
