The Java portion of Ant does and the wrapper scripts for Unix as well
as the Perl version (don't know enough Python to comment on that
script) pass this value to the shell - only the DOS batch file
swallows it.

There already is a bug report to this extent, go and vote for it, or
even better, send a fix 8-)
