Perhaps a comment to that effect should be added to the <parallel> task's
javadoc?

It did in fact seem to solve the problem I was having, but the problem was
only intermittant so I'll not pronunce love&joy yet.

oh my yes. That is unless you know that javac was written to be thread safe.
