The only version that showed even remotely the behavior you describe
has been 1.1 IIRC - and probably that ancient version of Ant shipping
with Tomcat 3.1. But even 1.1 wouldn't compile the files but copy
them as "support files".

My fault, it has been added only six weeks ago, I should have checked
