If your source files belong to a package, you can put them as far down some tree as you like, so long as you point <javac> up to (but not including) the directory where the package structure begins. In other words, you can have: /rootdir/sub1/sub2/subN... so long as eventually you get to test/foo/*.java, for .java files declared to be part of the test.foo package, and you point <javac> to the directory the "test" directory lives in.
