After all, they served our purposes so splendidly in Kosovo and the Presevo Valley region of Serbia. They played an indispensible role aiding NATO in toppling a major impediment to the military occupation of the Balkans and its 'forward engagement' in the Caucasus and Central Asia. We couldn't have consolidated the process of encircling Russia and moving on China without their timely assistance. Which is why *all* parties need to press forward, etc. Do the words "cat-and-mouse" come to mind?] Monday July 30 3:31 PM ET U.S. Says Rebels Break Cease-Fire in Macedonia WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The United States on Monday condemned violence by ethnic Albanian guerrillas in Macedonia and accused ``extremist rebels of breaking a truce. ``We strongly condemn a pattern of deliberate cease-fire violations by ethnic Albanian armed groups in Macedonia, State Department spokesman Charles Hunter told a daily briefing. ``In blatant violation of the agreement they have signed, the extremists have maintained their presence in some of the villages in the Tetovo area. Weve had reports of violence and intimidation ... by the extremists against ethnic Macedonia civilians, including the burning of their homes, he said. Hunter also cited an attack on the motorcade of Macedonian Interior Minister Ljube Boskovski and a land mine that killed two civilians, both on Sunday. ``These are blatant violations of the cease-fire agreement, and they are unacceptable. They are endangering the lives of civilians and preventing residents from returning to their homes, the spokesman said. He said the United States expected the rebel National Liberation Army (NLA) to comply with the cease-fire. On the political talks between Macedonia's ethnic Slavs and ethnic Albanians, from which the NLA has been excluded, he said, ``While difficult issues remain, the Macedonian government and party leaders have made significant progress. The talks at the lakeside resort of Ohrid continued for a third day on Monday but one Macedonian source said they had become ``gridlocked by evening. The peace plan under discussion at Ohrid will need NLA support if the rebels are to end the five-month-old rebellion and disarm. An amnesty would also be key to any deal. ``All parties need to press forward with negotiations and reach an agreement that addresses the concerns of all sides, that respects the rights of all the people of Macedonia and that preserves Macedonias territorial integrity and sovereignty, said Hunter. Last week, in response to anti-Western protests in Macedonia, the United States firmly rejected any suggestion that it supported the ethnic Albanian militants. Nationalist mobs threw rocks and smashed windows at the U.S. Embassy and other international offices in Skopje, the Macedonian capital, on Tuesday in anger over the West's handling of the rebellion. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
