Visit our website: HTTP://WWW.STOPNATO.ORG.UK --------------------------------------------- August 4, 2001 2 Serb Policemen Killed, 2 Wounded by DRAGAN ILIC Associated Press writer NIS, Yugoslavia (AP) -- Gunmen ambushed a police unit just outside the boundary with Kosovo, killing two Serb policemen and injuring two others, police said Saturday. The attack late Friday was the most serious incident since May, when Yugoslav forces regained control of the area in southern Serbia, the larger of Yugoslavia's two republics. Yugoslav forces took over the region after ethnic Albanian rebels pulled out under a NATO-brokered deal. A top ranking police official who spoke on condition of anonymity told The Associated Press that a renegade rebel group launched the attack. Rebels sprayed gunfire into a police camp near the village of Muhovac, 7 miles west of the Serb town of Vranje, killing Dragan Brcarevic and Miodrag Mladenovic, police said. Two other men were injured, one seriously. Police returned fire, but there was no word on casualties. A rebel ethnic Albanian group -- the Liberation Army of Presevo, Medvedja and Bujanovac -- had been fighting Serb authorities in the area since the NATO-led mission arrived in Kosovo in 1999. The rebels had swept into a 3-mile-wide region the alliance had set aside as a buffer zone to put breathing space between NATO troops and Yugoslav army forces. NATO allowed Yugoslav forces to regain control of the zone after former President Slobodan Milosevic fell from power last October and a new, democratic government in Belgrade took control.
