Fighting spreads to key city after deadly ambush
TETOVO, Macedonia, Aug 8 ( AFP) -
Automatic weapons fire erupted in Tetovo on Wednesday
and ethnic Albanian guerrillas were seen searching
houses in Macedonia's second city following a deadly
rebel ambush of an army convoy, an AFP journalist
reported.
Shooting and two loud explosions were heard in the
north of Tetovo near the city's stadium.
One group of rebels wearing uniforms bearing the
insignia of the ethnic Albanian National Liberation
Army were operating around a mosque near the city
center while others were seen searching houses
belonging to Slav Macedonians on the city's southern
edge.
Rebels also set up a roadblock and were searching cars
heading south from Tetovo towards the town of
Gostivar.
The rebel activity in Tetovo came after NLA guerrillas
killed 10 Macedonian soldiers earlier in the day in an
ambush on an army convoy on the road leading from the
capital Skopje to Tetovo, a predominantly Albanian
city in the northwest of the country.
