NATO Meeting to Be Held in Naples

ROME Premier Silvio Berlusconi indicated Thursday
that a September NATO meeting will go ahead in Naples
as scheduled, despite fears of a repeat of the massive
riots that marred last month's Group of Eight summit
in Genoa.
The conservative premier also said he would still
prefer moving another international gathering a U.N.
summit on global hunger to take place in November
from Rome to Africa.
"We are going to try to hold the (NATO) summit in a
way that there will be no incidents," Berlusconi told
reporters. "We realize that Italy cannot renounce
holding on its territory such an important summit."
The Sept. 26-27 meeting will bring together NATO's 19
defense ministers and is expected to focus on U.S.
plans for a missile defense system.
This week, Naples Mayor Rosa Russo Jervolino had
called for a postponement of the meeting, saying it
posed serious security risks. Her idea was backed by
some fellow center-left politicians.
Berlusconi had earlier suggested that a summit of the
U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization, scheduled for
Nov. 5-9, be moved from Rome. He said that Italy had
already done its duty by playing host to the G-8
summit.
The Genoa meeting turned into a major embarrassment
for the government. Police were unable to quell the
violence, which left one protester dead, over 200
injured, and entire neighborhoods in Genoa in
shambles.
Berlusconi said Thursday that the government was still
working to have the summit transferred to an African
country, but the U.N. agency has indicated the meeting
will be held as scheduled in the Italian capital.
