Ukraine U.S. Embassy Protester Held
The Associated Press
Thursday, Aug. 9, 2001; 12:24 p.m. EDT
KIEV, Ukraine Police detained a Ukrainian man who
threatened to blow up an F-1 grenade Thursday at the
entrance to the U.S. Embassy, police officials said.
Embassy guards called police after Vasyl Lisovyi, 53,
demanded to talk with law enforcement officials and
journalists, waving the grenade and claiming he was
being mistreated by local authorities in his home
region of Dnipropetrovsk in eastern Ukraine.
Lisovyi said he had suffered injustice in failed
property deals, said Oleksandr Naumov, a spokesman for
the Interior Ministry's branch in Kiev.
"He (Lisovyi) was overexcited and it was not possible
to get a clear explanation from him," the spokesman
said.
Lisovyi's wife and a 25-year-old son supported the
protest at the scene.
After talks with police, security officials and
prosecutors, the Lisovyi family agreed to hand over
the explosive and went to the General Prosecutor's
Office.
Lisovyi's action was apparently aimed at drawing
attention to himself, not at attacking the embassy,
Naumov said.
Officials were studying the grenade and investigating
the incident.
