Russian Observer
August 14, 2001

According to one of the Russian versions explaining
the loss of the Kursk, the hated sub was deliberately
destroyed on orders from NATO's top brass...But what
were they trying to hide? In fact they concealed the
backstage talks with NATO on whether the West was
prepared to admit Russia into the Atlantic alliance or
not. And the Serb factor and the Kursk are merely
tactical means used to solve this problem. But NATO
said "No." Because
the West had not entirely "digested" Eastern Europe,
it had not entirely dismembered Serbia and Macedonia,
and had not finished the struggle for Ukraine with its
subsequent division into left-bank and right-bank
parts.

Russian manoeuvres in Baltic Sea : warning to NATO
Russian expert comments on military exercises in
Baltic Sea
14.24.2001, 18:24
The Russian president's attitude to NATO is
well-known: either Russia becomes a member of the
alliance or it opposes it because otherwise its
interests are impinged. For that reason any military
manoeuvers should be regarded in that particular
context. The Baltic manoeuvres are not intended to
intimidate but serve as a warning. Russian leaders are
as much as saying, "Russia is strong enough to oppose
the entire NATO bloc."
Recent TV programs and newspaper articles have been
harping on that theme in that particular context in
connection with the anniversary of the Kursk tragedy.
They have pointed out that a submarine regarded by
NATO as invulnerable and elusive triggered a spate of
dismissals among ranking NATO officials precisely
because they failed to keep track of it, especially
during the Serbia crisis.
According to one of the Russian versions explaining
the loss of the Kursk, the hated sub was deliberately
destroyed on orders from NATO's top brass, above all,
those of them who were around the Mediterranean and
the Adriatic during that crisis. If that theory is
anything to go by, the act was a kind of revenge.
It has been supposed that the Kursk was sunk by two
submarines - one British and the other American. I
closely followed those developments last year and
remember how the government's lies irritated everyone.
But what were they trying to hide? In fact they
concealed the backstage talks with NATO on whether the
West was prepared to admit Russia to the Atlantic
alliance or not. And the Serb factor and the Kursk are
merely tactical means used to solve this problem. But
the West said "No." Because NATO had not entirely
"digested" Eastern Europe, it had not entirely
dismembered Serbia and Macedonia, and had not finished
the struggle for Ukraine with its subsequent division
into left-bank and right-bank parts.
Similar confrontation is in the Baltic area.
Bargaining is under way. And the military exercises,
also in the Baltic area, are just a tactical means to
be used by Moscow for bargaining out from NATO the
most favorable conditions for further talks. To attain
that goal, any means may be used, the Russian
leadership considers.
