Czech Paratroopers to Protect NATO Command in
Macedonia
PRAGUE, Aug 17, 2001 -- (Agence France Presse) Some
120 paratroopers from the Czech Republic will arrive
in Macedonia on Friday and Saturday to ensure the
protection of the headquarters of the NATO weapons
collection mission, the head of army general staff
said Thursday.
General Jiri Sedivy told the paratroopers at a base in
Chrudim, eastern Bohemia, that their mission was of
key importance to the success of Operation Essential
Harvest.
"We can't be 100 percent sure that everybody will be
willing to respect the signed agreements," said
Sedivy.
He called on the troops to be careful and to show
discipline.
Military sources said 95 percent of the troops have
already served in the Balkans.
NATO is sending 400 British troops to Skopje to set up
the command headquarters that is expected to lead a
3,500-strong force in its mission to collect weapons
surrendered by ethnic Albanian rebels. ((c) 2001
