Italian Defense Minister Doubts NATO Mission in
Macedonia

THU, AUG 30, 2001

Italian Defense Minister Antonio Martino said in an
interview published Wednesday that he shared
Macedonian doubts about effects of the NATO's mission
to collect weapons from ethnic Albanians in Macedonia.

Martino told Milan financial daily Il Sole 24 Ore:
"This is the major risk of the mission. The objections
raised by the Macedonians should be taken very
seriously. A sham disarmament is no good to anyone."

NATO's "Essential Harvest" mission began on Monday. A
4,500-strong British-led force, which includes 700
Italians, has been tasked to collect weapons from
rebel fighters in an operation scheduled to last 30
days.

Martino said that he "strongly hoped" the time
schedule would be respected but added that "its
prolongation cannot be excluded."

Referring to the mission's tragic start, with the
death of a British soldier who died after a lump of
concrete was thrown at his vehicle, Martino said that
"I knew there would be risks."
