[Just as war moves are heating up in the Caucasus and
the U.S. and UK dominated Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan
(Azerbaijan-Georgia-Turkey) pipeline project is
getting underway, Shevardnadze decides to pay a trip
to Washington...for more aid, largely of the military
variety.
Georgia is already slated to become NATO's first
non-European/non-North American member, by most
reports as early as next year, with fellow Partnership
for Peace member Azerbaijan not far behind.
The Turkey-Georgia-Azerbaijan axis will then become an
entirely NATO operation and assorted pan-Turkic
seccessionist movements will be used to destabilize
Iran and Central Asia, all the way to China's Xinjiang
Province.
In short, what the infamous Zbigniew Brzezinski meant
by the title of his latest book, The Grand Chessboard.

"The United States continues to view Georgia one of
its main partners, [Shevardnadze] said.
Since gaining independence with the 1991 Soviet
collapse, Georgia has tried to strengthen its ties
with the West, particularly with the United States....
Shevardnadze said that U.S. aid to Georgia totaled
$59.5 million so far this year, not counting American
support for Georgia's miltary.

Georgian President to Visit U.S.
The Associated Press
Monday, Sept. 3, 2001; 10:06 a.m. EDT
TBILISI, Georgia Georgian President Eduard
Shevardnadze will pay a visit to the United States
next month, his press service reported Monday.
The visit is tentatively scheduled to start Oct. 5, it
said.
Shevardnadze, speaking in his weekly radio address
Monday, confirmed that the trip would take place "in
the nearest future" and praised Washington as a key
ally.
"The United States continues to consider Georgia one
of its main partners," he said.
Since gaining independence with the 1991 Soviet
collapse, Georgia has tried to strengthen its ties
with the West, particularly with the United States,
and emerge from Russia's shadow.
Shevardnadze said U.S. aid to Georgia totaled $59.5
million so far this year, not counting American
support for Georgia's military. The funds were spent
on supporting private businesses, social and
environmental projects, land reform and the energy
sphere.
