[NATO Turkish troops will surely be appreciated by the
locals, as they no doubt are in Macedonia currently.
Perhaps they will include military personnel fresh
from insuring multiethnic harmony in Turkish Kurdistan
or some who have just returned from Turkey's latest,
week-long, invasion of Northern Iraq, protecting
national integrity and the rule of international law.
And we all know what vital interests Baltic nation
Lithuania has in the Adriatic.
Again, to refresh our memories: Numerous polls have
been conducted in Slovenia itself demonstrating
widespread opposition to NATO membership.
Another purpose of the scheduled NATO exercise is, I'm
sure, to foster democracy.] 


NATO to Hold Partnership for Peace Military Exercise
off Slovene Coast
Sep 5, 2001 -- (BBC Monitoring) Text of report in
English by Slovene news agency STA.
Postojna, 5 September: An international military
exercise is to take place at Ankaran, the Slovene
coast, between 17 and 22 September in which
Partnership for Peace (PfP) countries Slovenia,
Bulgaria, Croatia, Lithuania and Romania, as well as
NATO members France, Italy, Turkey and the U.S. are to
take part. The exercise Cooperative Engagement will be
under the direction of the Allied Naval Forces
Southern Europe, the Slovene Armed Forces said on
Wednesday [5 September].
The exercise will take place in the form of workshops
and lectures by NATO naval military experts and short
exercises, as well as visits to ships and aircrafts.
The main goal of the exercise will be to improve
interoperability among maritime forces of NATO and
partner nations in mine countermeasures and search and
rescue operations for use in peace
support/humanitarian assistance.
Italy's minesweeper Numana and a Trieste coastguard
boat will be docked in the port of Koper during the
exercise, while French military airplane LE N 262E,
the Trieste coastguard helicopter Avgusta Bell 412,
and the Slovene Armed Forces helicopter Bell 412 will
land at the Portoroz airport. Sea vessels and
aircrafts will be used only in the presentation of
their equipment.
