Nova Gorica, 5 September: The Italian police on Tuesday [4 September] once again beefed up the control on the Slovene-Italian border, after it pulled back 210 additional police officers last Friday [31 August] who participated in a month-long "unsuccessful" effort to curb illegal migration to Italy. Thus, 100 new police officers arrived in Gorizia on Tuesday with the task to prevent illegal immigrants from crossing the border. The Gorizia police said that the new forces would be in place only by 10 September, but could not say why the measure is short-term. The decision came from the Interior Ministry, said the Gorizia police. The police officers will control the border in the vicinity of Gorizia. However, the strengthened border control is obviously not linked with the visit by Italian President Carlo Azeglio Ciampi to Gorizia, as was speculated by some Italian newspapers on Tuesday. Ciampi is to visit Gorizia on 16 September, while the police forces are to leave on 10 September already. The previous build-up of 210 police officers has reportedly not substantially reduced the number of illegal immigrants.
