By backing out of the conference, the United States and Israel ``undermined the seriousness and thoroughness of the conference,'' a signed commentary carried on China's official Xinhua news agency said. The United States and Israel walked out of the conference on Monday in protest at anti-Israeli language, confirming the views of skeptics who said the entire U.N. event had been hijacked by the issue of escalating violence in the Middle East.
