NATO Troops in Bosnia on Alert

SARAJEVO, Sep 13, 2001 -- (dpa) The NATO-led
Stabilization Force (SFOR) in Bosnia-Herzegovina has
increased security measures, following the terrorist
attacks in the United States, SFOR said on Wednesday.

All personnel and their vehicles entering SFOR bases
would be searched, SFOR said in a statement.

"We are following the events in the U.S. with deep
concern. We take security seriously every day and
remain vigilant and take actions that we think are
appropriate," SFOR's statement read.

However, the essential operational activity to
maintain a safe and secure environment in Bosnia
continues, it added.

Some 20,000 troops, including more than 3,500 American
soldiers, serve with the NATO peacekeeping mission in
Bosnia-Herzegovina.

The Sarajevo Canton Police put its force on alert in
the part of the capital where most foreign embassies
and international missions are located.

Increased security measures were also in force at all
airports.

The U.S. embassy in Sarajevo was closed for security
reasons soon after the attacks and will remain shut
until Friday.
