[As today's Irish Times reports that Bush is prepared
to call up 1,000,000 reservists, the following once
again suggests the full scope - and breadth - of
planned military actions.]

U.S. Soldiers in Kuwait Desert Ready for Action
By Ashraf Fouad
CAMP DOHA, Kuwait (Reuters) - United States soldiers
training in the Kuwaiti desert vowed on Saturday they
would win the war against ``terrorism following the
devastating attacks on the World Trade Center and
Pentagon.
``I am willing to do anything that it takes to bring
the perpetrators to justice. If we are given a mission
we will execute it regardless of where it is in the
world, U.S. Captain Tom Cipolla, 32, of Kansas,
Missouri, told Reuters.
He was speaking at U.S. Camp Doha on the outskirts of
Kuwait City where the United States has more than
1,000 troops and heavy military hardware deployed.
A task force of some 1,500 ground troops are training
in a Kuwaiti desert location close to the border with
Kuwait's former occupier Iraq.
``We are ready to do anything asked of us, said
Cipolla when asked if the level of training on
conventional warfare was adequate for a close combat
mission in Afghanistan.
The United States has named Saudi-born dissident Osama
bin Laden as the main suspect in the attacks on
Tuesday, in which hijacked passenger jets were flown
into the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, killing
thousands.
Afghanistan's ruling Islamic Taliban movement is
sheltering bin Laden, but has said he is not involved.
There has been widespread speculation that any U.S.
military retaliation might include the deployment of
ground troops.
Major Mark Boussy, 37, said the U.S. was being ``very
cautious about taking any action without getting all
the information.
But he said he was confident Washington would gather
strong evidence about who was behind the attack.
``Freedom is very important to the American people,
he added.
``We cannot live in a scared society in America and it
is up to the U.S. military to follow the lead of the
Commander-in- Chief (President Bush) to do whatever is
necessary so that civilians may live in a free
society.
Boussy from Quincy, Massachusetts, said he expected
America's Gulf Arab allies would continue to support
the U.S. as they had in the past.
Hundreds of U.S. soldiers packed a hall at Camp Doha
to meet Kuwait's Defense Minister Sheikh Jaber
al-Hamad al-Sabah who extended condolences and pledged
his country's full support.
He assured them Kuwait had not forgotten the role the
United States played in the 1991 Gulf War against
Iraq.
``We stand by you in this ordeal...We place our hands
in yours to combat such acts, he said, referring to
this weeks attacks on the U.S.
The United States also reiterated its commitment to
the security of Kuwait, which is often engaged in
bitter exchanges with Iraq.
Kuwait's Crown Prince and Prime Minister Sheikh Saad
al- Abdulla al-Sabah, in a further sign of support,
went to the United States Embassy in Kuwait on
Saturday to extend his condolences.
