Visit our website: HTTP://WWW.STOPNATO.ORG.UK --------------------------------------------- Fictive scenario, my foot. The Sofia Echo Issue 37 - 14 to 20, 2001 NATO exercises to continue By Rozalia Hristova NATO is currently conducting a multinational air force exercise in Bulgaria despite Tuesday's terrorist attacks in the U.S. The largest NATO Partnership for Peace exercise this year, entitled Co-operative Key 2001, is the first exercise to be held in Bulgaria on such a large scale, according to Major General Dimitar Tsvetkov, the Bulgarian officer in charge. CK-01 was inaugurated on Tuesday with a moment of silence in memory of the victims in the U.S. "There is no change in the initial schedule of the exercise," said Lieutenant Colonel Kosta Kostov from the international press centre. "We go on as planned. Nobody has told us that the exercise might be postponed." Tsvetkov said on Tuesday that all the necessary measures had been taken to ensure the security of U.S. participants. According to the police, civil and military police are guarding the hotels where participants in the military manoeuvers are accommodated. Nine NATO member states and 13 member countries of the Partnership for Peace program are taking part in the training which will continue until September 21 at the Graf Ignatievo and Krumovo airbases near Plovdiv and the training ground at the village of Koren. The military exercise is based on a fictive scenario in which planes and military troops of NATO member states respond to a United Nations plea for NATO to send multinational forces and support a humanitarian operation. More than 1,300 soldiers and about 70 aircraft together with representatives of the United Nations High Commissioner on Refugees and a number of non-government organizations are taking part in the exercise. The Bulgarian Air Force is taking part with more than 520 servicemen and around 10 aircraft. __________________________________________________ Terrorist Attacks on U.S. - How can you help?
