They voiced their opposition to acts of terrorism committed by individuals, groups, or states. They opposed retaliation and war as reactions to terrorism. They called for peaceful means of resolution and analysis of the causes of terrorism. Most speakers condemned Prime Minister Chrétien’s pledge to join a US war of retaliation on an as yet unidentifiably culpable target. Rather, they pledged to defend the rights of all Canadians, especially the ethnic minorities already being singled out for attack in reaction to the terrorist acts on New York and the Pentagon.
