Hi all,
in my second year undergrad Peace and Conflict Studies class in the Fall of
1998 we were asked to do a mock two page "Policy Briefing" for Canada's DFAIT
on one of ten countries. I picked Afghanistan and concluded that the goal of
American policy in the region is to legitimize the gains of the Taliban and
to secure this space for its own broader economic and geopoltical interests.
I predicted that US troops or "observers" could be stationed in the country
by 1999 or early 2000. Note that the language I use is influenced by the
audience, my Prof. was, and still is, and advisor to Al Gore. Although, I
wrote the essay as a second year undergrad with minimal knowledge of
Afghanistan, and had to leave out whole paragraphs due to the length of the
assignment I think I did a pretty good job in the end gauging the importance
of Afghanistan for the US (although of course the reasons for its importance,
as can be seen in Jared/Rick/Nico's piece and other versions of basically the
same idea, are far more complex than this simple summary). I've attached my
October 1998 analysis to this email.
cheers!
Kole
