Serb mass grave 'reveals 269 bodies'

The bodies have been in the graves for two years

A district court in Belgrade says investigators have found at least 269
bodies in a mass grave outside the city.
The victims are believed to be male ethnic Albanian civilians killed by
Yugoslav troops during the Kosovo conflict.

Milosevic is alleged to have order disposal of bodies

Preliminary results of the exhumations and post mortems showed that the
bodies had been in the grave for around two years.

Exhumations at the site - a police training centre at the village of
Batajnica 10 km (six miles) north of Belgrade - began earlier this year.

The court said the bodies contained particles of bullets from small arms, and
some had been exposed to high temperatures.

They are believed to include the bodies of 86 Kosovo Albanians originally put
in a freezer compartment of a lorry and dumped in the River Danube.

Public shock

The interior ministry released a ten-minute film in June showing human bones
and skulls being removed from the ground at Batajnica.

Hundreds of ethnic Albanians were killed

The Serbian public was shocked by this, the first real evidence of mass
killings of Kosovo Albanians.

Other mass graves in different parts of Serbia are also being investigated as
part of an inquiry into reports that former president Slobodan Milosevic
ordered a cover-up of all evidence - including the disposal of bodies - that
could link him to war crimes.

Mr Milosevic is currently awaiting trial at the UN war crimes tribunal in The
Hague.
