The Gunpowder Plot of 1605 in England was betrayed because Lord Monteagle
received an anonymous letter to stay away from the forthcoming session of
Parliament. He was a relative of one of the plotters, Francis Tresham, and
it is widely believed Tresham sent the letter, though it has never been
proved.
If a single warning letter to one person could not be kept secret in the
17th century, it is hard to see how lots of Israelis in the modern
information age could be tipped off that something was up without the
word getting out.
