* Most Europeans Support Their Involvement In Military Action
------------------------------------------------------------------------
--

The Associated Press reports that according to a new poll, majorities in
several European countries and Israel want their nations to take part in
a well-planned military action against the terrorists behind last week's
attacks against the United States. (

Some 79 percent of British adults and 73 percent of French adults
surveyed in a Sofres-Gallup poll said their nations should cooperate in
a U.S.-led military campaign aimed at the masterminds of the Sept. 11
attacks.

More than half of Germans polled, 53 percent, said they would support a
role in a U.S. military anti-terrorism campaign, as did 66 percent of
Italians 66 percent of Israelis and 58 percent of Spaniards.

French President Jacques Chirac met with President Bush in Washington
yesterday to express France's commitment to fighting terrorism.

When asked whether France might play a military role, Defense Minister
Alain Richard told CNN on Wednesday that his country is keeping its
options open.

"The NATO countries, Japan, and South Korea have enjoyed mutual defense
pacts with the United States that have amounted to a multi-billion
dollar U.S. taxpayer-financed defense subsidy for more than 50 years,
along with the assurance that the U.S. military would stand by them
through any threat," writes Associate Policy Analyst Barbara Conry in
"From 911 to
9/11: Obligations of U.S. Allies." (

"Now it's time for those allies to demonstrate support for the United
States through more than words. The responsibility of those countries,
some of which may owe their very existence to the United States, is no
less than to support any reasonable request Washington might have as the
United States faces an unprecedented threat to its homeland."
