NSA Seeks to Reduce Workforce http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A19546-2001Nov26.html Tuesday, November 27, 2001; Page A02 The National Security Agency is offering workers an early retirement package in an effort to streamline its workforce and focus on "core mission areas" such as intercepting communications and protecting national security information systems. It will consider layoffs "only as a last resort" toward the end of fiscal 2002, an agency spokeswoman said yesterday. She declined to say how many people NSA plans to let go. The jobs targeted are in facilities maintenance and logistics. An agency Web site announcement said NSA will consider "potential outsourcing" of these jobs. NSA, headquartered at Fort Meade, has 15,000 civilians worldwide.
