Whilst this may be digressing from the 'important' issues and my apologies
in advance for wasting any one's time. South Korea has a culture of
horrendous cruelty to cats and dogs. Apparently more they suffer during the
slaughter they taste better. I find it sad that so many Western governments
have done nothing for the wretched creatures and with significant trade in
the offing Blair is bound to do nothing. Perhaps the football loving nations
and supporters may take the World Cup opportunity to raise the issues and at
least achieve humanitarian slaughter if they have to eat them. Jacques

Blair set to back Eurofighter for Seoul
=========================
Financial Times, Dec 4, 2001
By ANDREW WARD

Tony Blair is expected to support international engagement with North Korea
and urge Seoul to select the British-backed Eurofighter as its next fighter
aircraft when he meets the South Korean president in London today.

The prime minister is set to pledge support for Kim Dae-jung's flagging
efforts to reconcile the divided Korean peninsula, and to seek deeper trade
ties. Diplomats said Eurofighter's bid to win South Korea's Dollars 4bn
next-generation fighter jet contract would be high on the UK agenda for the
Downing Street summit.

Mr Blair's support for Eurofighter is designed to combat a perception in
Seoul that the four-nation European fighter jet consortium has lacked
commitment to the South Korean contract.

Eurofighter is judged to be trailing Boeing of the US and France's Dassault
in the race to win the deal, which is currently the most lucrative of its
kind. Boeing is considered favourite because of US military ties with Seoul
but the Europeans have gained ground.

The UK would stand to claim about half the value of the contract if
Eurofighter won the business because the largest proportion of the jet is
manufactured in Britain by BAe Systems.

Eurofighter - backed by the UK, Germany, Spain and Italy - is engaged in a
dogfight with its US and French rivals for lucrative jet contracts around
the world.

The airforces of the four consortium nations are expected to take delivery
of the first Eurofighter jets next year.

Mr Blair is expected to urge renewed international efforts to lower barriers
with communist North Korea following a deterioration in the reclusive
regime's relations with Seoul and Washington in recent weeks.

The UK has opened an embassy in Pyongyang, the North Korean capital, and
taken part in European Union aid and investment initiatives in the country.

"Britain has a role in encouraging both its US and European allies to step
up efforts to promote change in North Korea," said a South Korean government
adviser. Korea's president, Page 22
