Ananova :

Spy lied about sister to 'save himself'
=========================

An American whose evidence sent his sister to the electric chair admits he
lied at her trial.

David Greenglass gave evidence against his sister Ethel Rosenberg at an
espionage trial in 1951.

It resulted in her and her husband being executed for passing the secrets of
the US atom bomb to the Soviets.

But Greenglass says he lied to save himself and did not regret perjuring
himself.

"As a spy who turned his family in - I don't care," Greenglass told CBS's 60
Minutes II programme.

The ex-spy, who spent 15 years in prison for betraying his country, said his
sister should have confessed to save her life.

But he added that he feared his wife would also be found guilty of spying
and said: "I would not sacrifice my wife and my children for my sister."

He admitted he is sometimes haunted by the Rosenberg case but said that if
he were to meet the two sons the Rosenbergs left behind, he would not
apologise for his part in their execution.

He added: "I had no idea they would give them the death sentence."

His televised admission came as he told a new book about the case that he
was indeed a spy, despite living in silence and under an assumed name since
he was freed from prison.
