PRISTINA -- Five United Nations employees in Kosovo became sick from a
letter laced with a toxic substance sent from New York, UN officials
said Thursday.

The content of the parcel will be tested, but it was not believed to be
anthrax or any other biologically hazardous material, UN police said in
a statement.

A mail room employee Wednesday noticed that a large envelope in the
pouch from UN headquarters in New York had a rip on the corner, UN
spokeswoman Susan Manuel said. A "substance came out of the envelope and
he got an immediate rash." Four others in the room suffered an upset
stomach or irritated eyes, she said. The letter had passed through
Skopje, Macedonia, before Kosovo.
