BRUSSELS -- Outside the Laeken royal palace, a demonstration by 8,000 anti-globalization activists degenerated into violence. Under the banner of "another Europe for another world," activists, including anti-globalists grouped in an organization calling itself D14, demonstrated. They said EU policies go "against the aspirations of the people" because they pursue capitalism, free trade and the American economic model. Tens of thousands of protesters, representing various environmental, trade and other protest groups, have marched through Brussels. Masked anarchists attacked two banks and a police station about three km (two miles) from the summit site. "Good for the rich, bad for the poor. We don't want your capitalist war," they chanted. Witnesses said the anarchists, some speaking German and wearing black clothes and heavy boots, smashed bank windows with cobblestones and metal staves, and rammed a metal crash barrier through the windows of a police station. After they began pelting police with bricks, bottles and flares, and setting fire to barricades of crates, police used four water cannons and fired teargas to disperse a hard core of several hundred rioters. The clashes came at the end of two days of peaceful protest, staged to coincide with the EU summit in the royal palace of Laeken, in a Brussels suburb.
