BBC News Online: UK: Scotland Saturday, 15 December, 2001, 17:35 GMT Hundreds back anti-war demo ===================== More than 400 people have protested against the military action in Afghanistan and any escalation of the war against terrorism. Glasgow traffic ground to a halt as members of the Scottish Coalition For Justice Not War marched through the city centre before massing at the Central Mosque. The crowd, which included members of Scottish CND and Unison, braved the cold to hear speakers, including Labour MPs George Galloway and Mohammed Sarwar and Scottish Socialist leader Tommy Sheridan. Mr Galloway said Prime Minister Tony Blair must act to prevent US military action against other nations. With a No More War banner behind him, he told the crowd: "He (Mr Blair) may have objections to the extension of the conflict but we want to see action not words. "We want to see him openly telling the US President George W Bush government that they must not wage war against one Arab and Muslim country after another. "We have to say: No more war and no more sanctions. Let people live." The Glasgow Kelvin MP called on the protesters to urge their elected representatives and church leaders to speak out against the conflict. Mr Sarwar, MP for Glasgow Govan, condemned both the terror attacks on the US and the military campaign that has followed. He said: "We all condemn what happened on September 11. "But we also condemn the innocent lives which have been lost in Afghanistan through the use of cluster bombs, B52s and 50,000 daisy cutter bombs." Mr Sheridan spoke out against the "hypocrisy" of the war. "If we want to wage a war on terror and a war on terrorism then lets also have a war on poverty itself," he added. "That is what is killing tens of thousands of people every day."
