'No terrorist material found on ship'
========================

No terrorist material has so far been found on the cargo ship which has been
intercepted in the English Channel, say security sources.

The MV Nisha, which was heading for the UK, had reportedly stopped off in
Djibouti, next to Somalia, which has been linked with al-Qaida.

Royal Navy, customs officers and anti-terrorist officers are searching the
ship.

But according to security sources, no terrorist material has been found so
far.

Dramatic footage of the interception of the ship has shown the frigate HMS
Sutherland trailing the cargo ship by a few hundred yards.

Four rigid-inflatable boats then went after the merchant vessel, zipping
across the waves until they pulled level on the starboard side.

During a press conference with Russian President Vladimir Putin at RAF
Halton, Bucks, Tony Blair said: "In respect of the first part which is the
interdiction of the ship earlier today, I can't comment on the potential
nature of the threat itself.

"But I can simply say this - that we remain on top-level vigilance
throughout these coming weeks and even if the risk is only a potential risk
we will not hesitate to take any action that we think necessary in order to
investigate any potential threat."

The ship is owned by a well-established Indian company. Based in Bombay, the
Great Eastern Shipping Company was started in 1948 by the Sheth and
Dhiwandiwalla families who were heavily involved in the sugar trade.

Employing around 1,000 people, the company has a fleet of 38 cargo-carrying
vessels of 1.6 million deadweight (fully-laden) tonnes operating in the dry
bulk, crude oil, products and gas markets.
