Re Stiffen the U.N.'s spine to protect
humanity, Editorial, Dec. 26.
As a Serbian Canadian, I am always bothered by the continual
demonization and one-way truth about events in the former Yugoslavia by
Western media. This editorial is no exception. As usual, the Serbs are
used as the model of "ethnic cleansers;" the world must not allow this to
happen again. Yet, for the few who actually know what happened, ethnic
cleansing was supported and encouraged by Western governments.
In 1993, our brave Canadian soldiers fought a two-day battle
against Croatian forces who were slaughtering and cleansing Serbs in the
Medak Pocket of Croatia with the aid and approval of Western governments.
This was the first battle our troops faced since the Korean War and they
fought bravely and honourably. This was kept silent for years because it
did not fit in with the program of demonizing one side in the conflict. In
1995, the Croatian army launched "Operation Storm" with the help of German
arms and American military training and intelligence. The object was to
cleanse the Croatian Krajina of its Serb population. This was a
Western-backed cleansing that resulted in the largest shift of an ethnic
group during the entire Yugoslavian conflict.
To this day, Serbs are being forced out of Kosovo right under the
eyes of NATO troops. It is slowly becoming an ethnically pure Albanian
province with the approval of Western governments.
The media is doing a disservice to everyone involved by distorting
and ignoring the truth. How can the West stop ethnic cleansing when it is
one of the biggest practitioners?
