PRISTINA, Yugoslavia NATO-led peacekeepers and U.N.
police increased security in parts of Kosovo after a
booby-trapped grenade killed a Serb in eastern Kosovo
and a mob attacked a patrol in the north of the
province.
Additional forces have been deployed and patrols
increased in the ethnically mixed town of Kosovska
Kamenica, 35 miles east of the provincial capital,
Pristina, said Squadron Leader Daz Slaven, a spokesman
for the NATO-led peace force in Kosovo.
The midnight to 5 a.m. curfew in the town was extended
to begin at 6 p.m., Slaven said.
Sunday's explosion was the latest in a series of
violent incidents in Kosovska Kamenica, although it
was the first to claim a life.
In a statement, NATO's top commander in Kosovo, Lt.
Gen. Marcel Valentin, condemned "this and any acts of
interethnic violence."
In a separate incident, a mob attacked four U.N.
police officers and stoned their cars Sunday in
northern Kosovo after NATO-led peacekeepers raided a
bar and detained a Serb hardline activist. The
officers, who had been patrolling nearby, were not
injured.
The crowd also burned tires during the unrest in the
Serb-dominated part of Kosovska Mitrovica and attacked
the homes of several U.N. police officers, U.N. police
spokesman Derek Chappell said. No one was injured.
United Nations and NATO took control of Kosovo in
1999, after a NATO air war ended former Yugoslav
President Slobodan Milosevic's crackdown on ethnic
Albanians in the province.
