[The hip dissident Vaclav Havel failed to inform his countrymen what they were getting into when they sacrificed any shred of national sovereignty - and human dignity - by joining the 'North Atlantic Community.'] Czech Anti-Terror Unit to Deploy in Kuwait in March PRAGUE, Jan 9, 2002 -- (dpa) The Czech defense chief said Wednesday that the army plans to deploy an elite chemical warfare unit in Kuwait in early March to support the war against terrorism. About 350 soldiers, about half of whom serve with the Liberec- based 9th chemical warfare unit, will be sent to Kuwait, Defense Minister Jaroslav Tvrdik told TV Nova. The unit's exact destination and mission remain under wraps. The unit's specialists can detect chemical and radioactive threats on the battlefield. Trvdik's announcement ends months of speculation and international talks over a possible Czech contribution to the U.S.-led campaign against terrorists and terrorist-backing states, which began in October in Afghanistan. He said an advance team of about 20 soldiers would be dispatched to Kuwait this month. The United States, Britain and NATO leaders have praised Prague for offering the chemical unit as well as paratroopers, cargo planes and a field hospital. On Tuesday, the offer to send Czech paratroopers was rejected by the British command in Afghanistan. However, Czech officials think the army's field hospital will be deployed in the future.
