Former U.S. Nuclear Plant Worker Arrested for Making Terror Threats

Xinhuanet 2002-01-10 03:06:20

LOS ANGELES, January 9 (Xinhua) -- A former nuclear plant worker
in California has been arrested for making alleged terrorist
threats against former colleagues, local media reported Wednesday.
The unidentified 43-year-old man was arrested Tuesday at his
home in Laguna Niguel, Orange County, after security guards
reported he made several phone call threats to his former
colleagues at the San Onofre Nuclear Plant, 65 miles south of Los
Angeles.
In the phone calls, the man allegedly threatened to kill his
supervisors and co-workers. After he was arrested, police found
about 270 weapons -- including four hand grenades -- and up to 5,
000 rounds of ammunition in his home and in a rented storage
facility, the reports said.
During the search, two Orange County police officers were
overcome by noxious yellow vapor that was similar to the tear gas.
They were treated and released from a local hospital after
suffering from "irritation."
It remained unclear what job the man used to hold at the plant
and when and why he was fired. But before the arrest, he had been
barred from the nuclear facility and his picture was posted at
security gates. Enditem
