AFP. 12 January 2002. Chechens take Russian military oath for first time in a decade. MOSCOW -- Soldiers drafted from secessionist Chechyna to serve in the Russian army took the military oath on Saturday becoming the first to do so since the break-up of the Soviet Union in 1991, Russian media reported. Some 30 conscripts took part in a swearing-in ceremony at a training barracks for railway forces in the central Nizhny Novgorod region, RTR state television reported. No Chechen had been conscripted into the Russian military since independence was declared in 1991, according to the channel. One of the draftees, Sharbudi, pictured in Russian army uniform demonstrating a traditional Chechen dance, said he was happy with his lot. "We are respected here and we respect our fellow conscripts," said Sharbudi. In Moscow, another group of Chechen soldiers drafted by the 27th motor-rifle Sevastopol brigade took part in a similar ceremony, attended by deputy commander of the Moscow military district, Lieutenant-General Alexander Belusov, Interfax reported. Deputies from Russia's State Duma parliament, members of the Chechen diaspora living in Moscow and some parents of the conscripts were also present. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
