Reuters. 15 January 2002. Foreign Ministers: Yugoslav Rulers Must Stamp
Out Hatred.

BELGRADE -- Yugoslav Foreign Minister Goran Svilanovic warned Tuesday
widespread ethnic hatred still smoldered behind Yugoslavia's new
reformist image and urged his fellow leaders to do more to stamp it out.

"It is unacceptable that the language of hate is kept alive after having
killed tens of thousands of this country's people in the last 10 years
alone," Svilanovic told a news conference.

Svilanovic said there were daily expressions of hate in the media and at
large toward Jews, Muslims, Croats and Albanians. As an example he said
a television station financed by the federal state broadcast late last
year what he called a tirade against Jews, which prompted a protest from
Israel.

Svilanovic urged Yugoslav President Vojislav Kostunica and Serbian Prime
Minister Zoran Djindjic to return to the principles upon which they
overturned former President Slobodan Milosevic, who rose to power on a
Serb nationalist ticket that brought on the wars.

"Their silence when these things are said is louder than all the
incidents that have happened in the past year, such as expressions of
hate toward Jews, Muslims, Albanians, Croats. This silence is something
that must stop," he said.

The reformist coalition that ousted Milosevic in 2000 has since won
praise for its structural and economic reforms.

But critics say soul-searching over Serb nationalism is still
conspicuously absent from Yugoslavia.

Serbia and tiny Montenegro are the only remaining republics in federal
Yugoslavia, after Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Macedonia seceded in the
Balkan wars of the 1990s.
