Ananova. 21 January 2002. Bush plotting to topple Saddam within months.

President Bush is drawing up a plan to topple Saddam Hussein in the next
six months, according to White House sources.

Newsweek magazine reports that there is a general consensus among the
president's inner circle that the Iraqi dictator must be ousted.

Bush recently warned Saddam there would be consequences if Iraq did not
resume co-operation with UN arms inspectors, who have been barred from
the country since 1998.

The Iraqi leader called an emergency meeting yesterday of his two most
powerful bodies - the Revolutionary Command Council and the Regional
Command of the ruling Baath party - to discuss the country's response to
the threat.

Under the proposed plan, Newsweek says Iraqi "freedom fighters" will be
used, supported by US military forces. Plans by Washington to recruit
Iraqi fighters have been widely criticised in the past.

Under the new strategy, the US will continue pressuring Saddam to
readmit UN weapons inspectors, rather than launching a military attack
"tomorrow or unilaterally," the White House adviser said.

But former Air Force Lieutenant General Tom McInerney told The New York
Post, "Saddam has got to go - but we have to move quickly, because we
are racing against him getting a nuclear weapon."
