North Korea Army Boasts Power of Song http://dailynews.yahoo.com/h/nm/20020121/od/song_dc_1.html Monday January 21 8:26 AM ET SEOUL (Reuters) - North Korea's army, feared for its troops and artillery massed close to South Korea and its arsenal of ballistic missiles, boasts an even more powerful weapon: songs of devotion to leader Kim Jong-il. ``These songs are more powerful than any nuclear weapon which the imperialists describe as 'all-mighty','' North Korea's communist party newspaper Rodong Sinmun said Friday. Kim, the 59-year-old inspiration for the hymns, ``is the great brilliant commander who has led our army and people to victory with his unique policy on music, something unprecedented in history,'' the daily said in an editorial. In the communist world's first hereditary succession, Kim inherited power from his father, Kim Il-sung, when the founder of the Stalinist state died in 1994. Both Kims are the objects of intensive state-led worship in the nation of 23 million people. Kim Jong-il's 60th birthday on February 16 and the 90th birth anniversary of Kim Il-sung on April 15 are being billed by state media as the most important events in Korea's history. ``The Korean people are now struggling full of confidence, singing more loudly than ever before the revolutionary army songs vibrant with the idea of absolutely worshiping the leader,'' Friday's editorial said. _______________________________ Copyright 2002 Reuters Limited.
