China's Weaponry Industry Tries to Reduce Losses

Xinhuanet 2002-01-26 09:14:48

BEIJING, January 26 (Xinhuanet) -- China's weaponry industry has
continued to run at a loss but the rate of loss is beginning to
slow down.
Sources with the China Weaponry Industrial Corporation (Group)
revealed that last year the losses decreased by 25.2 percent,
which was a sign of recovery.
The corporation has closed nine sub-companies which were unable
to turn losses into profits, and laid off 61,000 workers, sources
say.
Though the industry is currently stagnant, it has made
achievements in the production of high-tech weapons, and has
improved the Chinese army's capability in the launching of
precision attacks, the making of rapid assaults and in electronic
war.
The corporation alone is expected to generate an income of 40
billion yuan (nearly 5 billion U.S. dollars) in 2002 and to build
itself into an internationally competitive company, sources say.
