Dear Bill,
A moment's thought would provide you answers
to the questions you pose.
Germany is number two among NATO nations, behind the
United States, in population, gross domestic product
and percentage/aggregate amount of funds contributed
to the NATO budget.
In fact there are German - NATO - troops on U.S. soil,
from military personnel in Oklahoma to a NATO tank
unit that entered from Canada last year, raising fears
of the introduction of BSE into this country at the
time. I believe there are also German warplanes
patrolling the Atlantic coast of the United States.
There are at this very moment German troops, naval
vessels and warplanes stationed abroad for the first
time since the defeat of the Third Reich in 1944: In
the U.S., Bosnia, Kosovo, Macedonia (where they're in
charge of the NATO occupation), Afghanistan, Kuwait,
Sudan, Yemen and who knows where else.
No, it's not been the case for 53 years that the U.S.
and its NATO allies have been, officially as a NATO
operation invoking Article 5 of the NATO Charter,
engaged in warfare and occupation outside of Europe;
that is, outside the alleged theater of operation that
defines NATO. Or did.
No, until the 1990s Germany, the U.S. and other
Western military powers, officially under the NATO
banner, had not plotted to tear apart, impoverish and
bomb a European (or any other) nation which presented
positively no threat to any NATO member state.
As for Schroeder's and Fischer's alleged reservations
about the Axis of Evil lunacy and plans for the
destruction of Iraq, I repeat myself: It's a con game,
just as supposed German government 'agonizing' over
troop deployments to Macedonia and Afghanistan earlier
were.
Germany (and France and Britain) will wholeheartedly
support and participate in any and every
U.S.-initiated military aggression anywhere in the
world.
To fail to recognize the qualitatively more advanced,
and dangerous, dynamic introduced with NATO expansion
starting in 1997, with the practical testing and
implementation of it in the 1999 war against
Yugoslavia, and since then the global operationalizion
of NATO as the military wing of Western globalization
is to miss the most significant and alarming events of
the post-Cold War world.
This isn't 1950 or even 1990.
Which is why we need to expose and oppose NATO and
demand its dismantling. Period.
